Editorial Reviews

Back in the distant '80s, when digital sound was new and dozens of new record companies were starting up all over the world, Hyperion, a new English record label, released the first disc by harpist Andrew Lawrence-King called Harp Music of the Italian Renaissance. It was instantly hailed as a masterpiece: not only was Hyperion's sound as rich, warm, full, clear, and clean as the best stereo discs of the '60s, but Lawrence-King was clearly a force to be reckoned with. His strong and subtle technique was beyond compare -- but then, there were no other period harpists making recordings so there was truly no one with whom to compare him. His insightful and soulful interpretations were beyond compare -- but then, there were no other recordings of most of the repertoire on the disc so there was truly no one with whom to compare him. His colorful and nuanced tone was beyond compare -- but then, there were no other recordings of the arpa doppia, so who knows what another might have sounded like. But most importantly, his taste was beyond compare: from his choice of instrument through his choice of repertoire to his choice of interpretation, no other harpist could match Lawrence-King. And now, nearly 20 years later, Hyperion has re-released Lawrence-King's debut recording and all that remains is for you to hear it. James Leonard, All Music Guide
