Editorial Reviews

Although the Dorsey Brothers band gets first billing on this album, the studio groups (which include trumpeter Bunny Berigan, trombonist Tommy Dorsey and Jimmy Dorsey on clarinet and alto) are actually in a subsidiary role on these performances, accompanying singers Bing Crosby, Mildred Bailey and Ethel Waters. Crosby and Waters are on four numbers, while Bailey is showcased on eight. Although strings are added to the Waters songs, the music is generally pretty jazz-oriented. Highlights include Bing's "Someone Stole Gabriel's Horn," and Bailey's "There's a Cabin in the Pines," and Waters' "Stormy Weather." Excellent pre-swing vocalizing. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
