After an outstanding "Messiah," conductor Paul McCreesh offers a new version of Handel's oratorio "Solomon." Star countertenor Andreas Scholl's poise is perfect for the majestic character of this wise Old Testament King. Soprano Alison Hagley's acting prowess is a bonus in the Judgement of Solomon, where the King must settle a child custody dispute. McCreesh's Gabrieli Consort and Players keep up a lively pace, especially in the famous orchestral passage, "Entry of the Queen of Sheba," which is a musical hundred-yard dash.
