With the advent of 1968's Hair, the era of the rock musical -- and the Age of Aquarius -- had dawned on Broadway. Subtitled "The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical," HAIR is a joyous and irreverent celebration of youth. Gerome Ragni, James Rado, and Galt MacDermot's golden score is filled with beauty and whimsy. Marvelous moments like "Good Morning Starshine," "Frank Mills," "I Got Life," and the title number are sophisticated, kinetic, and, above all, great fun. The cast recording, featuring Melba Moore, Diane Keaton, Paul Jabara, and Ronnie Dyson, captures all the ecstasy and agony of the 1960s. Showstoppers "Easy to Be Hard," "Where Do I Go?," and "Walking in Space" rank with the best pop songwriting of the decade. Hair's five-year Broadway run is legendary; the cast album also made history when it stayed at the top of the pop charts for 13 weeks during the musically hyperactive spring of 1969. Thirty years later Hair remains the definitive rock musical. David Elliot Cohen, Barnes & Noble
