November 23, 2009: This dual disc has mediocre sound quality despite the fact that it is remastered & it is not PC compatible, which means that the tracks on the CD side cannot be played on a computer or transferred to a portable listening device.

I bought this product to replace the original version of the CD I had (35DP7, CBS, Japan) released in around 1982 (apparently one of the first CDs ever made) because I expected that the remastering process would have improved the sound since those early days.

These comments apply to the CD side of this dual disc - I am not interested in the DVD side.

I use a studio mastering grade DAC & ATC speakers, so my system provides very clean & analytical (i.e. detailed & uncoloured) sound.

The remastering has made the sound quality of this great album worse, not better. It has spoilt the effect & the main appeal of this production, which was the presence, clarity & airiness of Barbra Streisand's fantastic voice rising above (in volume) & in front of (in sound stage placement) the background instrumentation to result in quite a realistic sensation of her actually being in the room.

The original CD mix did this (which was a testament to the original production quality) but the CD side of this dual disc does not do this & is very disappointing.

This dual disc renders Barbra Streisand further back in the mix & her voice is not rendered as cleanly as on the original CD - it sounds slightly rolled off in the top end as if 2nd or 3rd generation masters may have been used.

As is typical with most remastering these days, the volume is higher on this CD than on the original, but unlike most remasters, it is not cleaner, it is slightly muddier & the vocal / instrument mix has been altered sufficiently to rob the sound of the magical & sparkling quality it once had.

The result is that the appeal of the original album has been lost.

Barbra Streisand is no longer in the room with you a few feet away, she is now singing through a shroud alongside the rest of the musicians.

This surprises me a little because normally Sony do a reasonable job with their sound.

Unfortunately, this one is an example of either corporate incompetence or insensitivity.

If you want to hear the magic that this album can reveal, or if you want to enjoy the benefits of computer playback or be able to transfer the music onto a portable device, stick with the standard CD version (e.g. the 1990 version which is still available) & avoid this dual disc altogether.
