About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Since he's always swung through his own compositions like a kid playing on a set of monkey bars, it's not all that surprising that Beck would be ready, willing, and able to let a passel of remixers loose in his catalog -- as he does on this song-by-song deconstruction of 2005's Guero. There's not a lot of reverence in play here, which leads to plenty of sonic hijinks -- from the space-age groove that Beastie Boy Ad-Rock adds to "Shake Shake Tambourine" (the revised version of "Black Tambourine") to the oddly countrified Casio cloak that Homelife drapes over "E-Pro (Ghost Range)." The degree to which folks are willing to discard huge chunks of Beck's original blueprint is striking, but it's not as if the recruits are simply affecting change for the sake of change. French minimalists Air seem to genuinely believe that replacing the lounge groove of "Missing" with a metronomic pulse, for what's now called "Heaven Hammer," is a good idea -- and doggone if they don't make their case. A similar sense of adventure permeates just about all of Guerolito's cuts, making it less a companion piece to Guero than a work of art in its own right. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble
