About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Though he began his musical career as a backup singer, commercial jingle man, and session artist, Luther Vandross has long since been regarded as a master of love ballads. His nuanced vocals surge, then relent, twirling and softly flitting between notes as Luther travels pathways of romance, introspection, and bliss. GREATEST HITS is a pared-down follow-up to the 1989 two-disc set BEST OF LUTHER VANDROSS…THE BEST OF LOVE, with several worthwhile tracks that were not included in that defining collection. Highlights include the crossover pop smash "Power of Love/Love Power," from 1991's POWER OF LOVE, and a remake of Crosby, Stills & Nash's "Love the One You're With" (from 1994's SONGS), juiced up with a gospel choir and spirited organ to lend a reverent, down-home feel. "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye," a melancholy duet with Dionne Warwick from 1983's BUSY BODY, finds beauty in a breakup. But unquestionably, the collection's strength comes from Luther's dance-floor packers ("Never Too Much"), the quintessential wedding song "Here and Now," and the nine-minute-plus update of the Stevie Wonder classic "Superstar/Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)." This is vintage Luther -- the man with the voice that touches and caresses with soulful grace. Brett Johnson, Barnes & Noble

August 15, 2005: When I listen to Luther, I get lost in his voice and find myself alone in a magical world with just him and I. His voice transports you to another place that you hope to not return from, or for at least a little while. You can forget about your problems and worries for a while and not too many artists have that special God given gift.If I could I would give him 10 stars. There will never be another Luther...I will miss him...
