The double-disc set Greatest Hits of Big Country & the Skids collects the highlights of Stuart Adamson's work with his two major bands, the Skids and Big Country. The collection does a decent job of gathering the best moments from each group, including the Skids' "Working for the Yankee Dollar," "Into the Valley," "Charade," and "Masquerade" as well as Big Country's "Fields of Fire," "In a Big Country," "East of Eden," and "Where the Rose Is Sown." Not surprisingly, the emphasis is on Big Country's catalog, and the album digs fairly deeply into it, offering relatively obscure songs such as "Sheer," a duet with Kate Bush, and "Fragile Thing," which features Eddi Reader. While the Skids songs are a welcome addition to what is essentially a Big Country retrospective, fans of the former band will be much better served by the excellent best-of Sweet Suburbia. Still, this collection manages to be a better-than-average overview of Adamson's career. Heather Phares, All Music Guide
