David Holt was one of the main old timey revivalists of the '80s and Grandfather's Greatest Hits is his finest achievement. With this release, Holt constructed a set list of classic country songs -- from "John Henry" and "Fire on the Mountain" to "Wabash Cannonball," "Pretty Polly," and "Wreck of the Old '97" -- drafted in a handful of superstar guests (Mark O'Connor, Doc Watson, Duane Eddy, Jerry Douglas, Chet Atkins) and turned a convincing, good-humored performance that revived traditional country without embalming it. It's a wonderful, fun album that establishes Holt as one of the leading traditional revivalists of the latter-half of the 20th century. Thom Owens, All Music Guide
