Editorial Reviews

Gospel is a reissue of the 1975 Canaan Records album Flatt Gospel, originally credited to Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass. The Nashville Grass were a top-notch band that included a young Marty Stuart on mandolin and guitar, Curly Seckler on high harmony vocals, Kenny Ingram on banjo, and Paul Warren on fiddle. Warren features prominently on an instrumental rendition of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," on which his constant slides lend a mesmerizing discordant quality that makes the cut a standout on a consistently fine album. Aside from that tune and a couple of other gospel favorites such as "Let the Church Roll On," Flatt sings lesser-known and original inspirational songs, including a remake of the Flatt & Scruggs oldie "God Loves His Children." Flatt Gospel was one of Flatt's best solo albums, but was not widely heard the first time around; perhaps this reissue will help it find a larger audience. Greg Adams, All Music Guide
