Editorial Reviews

Ashanti may call herself the princess of hip-hop soul, but the coronation was premature. On her crunked-up debut, Ciara is the R&B singer who oozes TLC-sass, round-the-way-girl swagger and Aaliyah-worthy sex appeal. She's accessible enough that other women want to emulate her street-savvy style, and from one listen to the Lil' Jon–produced and Petey Pablo–assisted title track, "Goodies," it's obvious what the fellas want from the Atlanta belle. But -- sorry, boys -- as she croons, "If you're looking for the goodies, keep on lookin' cause they stayed in the jar." To her credit, not only is Ciara chaste, but she also has a fine singing voice -- reminiscent of Beyoncé without all the self-indulgent trills. The daring pairing of her honey-dipped vocals with propulsive Dirty South production, predominantly by Jazze Pha, makes Goodies such a refreshing listen. For instance, the percussive "Lookin' at You" sounds inspired by a black college marching band, and "The Title" is a contemporary doo-wop ditty that samples L.T.D.'s "Love Ballad." The disc also features an impressive cast of collaborators including Missy Elliott, who co-wrote and adds a guest rap on the disco skate–reminiscent "1, 2 Step"; Ludacris on the bass-heavy gem "Oh"; and R. Kelly, who wrote and produced the mid-tempo valentine "Next to You." Indeed, Ciara's got the Goodies. Come and get some. Tracy E. Hopkins, Barnes & Noble

November 07, 2006: Ciara's no vocal giant, but I'm sure that was evident from the first single. Her range is limited, but her vocals are solid on a lot of the tracks. Surprisingly, "Goodies" is where Ciara's vocals are at their weakest. During the time this CD came out she was close to the same category as Ashanti, Mya, and the majority of these females that were out there they might not be that amazing like there foremothers, but decent enough to make hits when coupled with the right production. And that's what saves this album - the production is on point. Jazze Pha seems to have done the bulk of it, but Diddy and R. Kelly contributed as well. “Goodies” & '1,2 step' were evidently the best tracks on this album which the radio couldn't get enough of. The main songs that I’ve listen to are "Thug Style", "Oh" feat. Ludacris (due to the beat), "Next to you" with R Kelly, "Ooh Baby" and "And I" (my fave). Filler is, of course, are bound to happen and some of these tracks are tolerable but I usually skip through them anyway. The one pet peeve that I do have regarding a CD is the doubling. The "Goodies" remix could have been left out and could have been replaced with another bumping track (it's the same song with a different rapper). Overall, “Goodies” has great production, decent lyrics, and catchy hooks. The only thing I would've preferred for this album is more ballads. Here’s hoping that Ciara focus more on her voice versus others' beats and hooks on her second album.
