About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

In the late '70s, punk-rock anti-anthems like "Anarchy in the U.K." and "London's Burning" launched a landmark musical and cultural revolution, but punk's flame burned fast and left people feeling pretty vacant. Enter "new romanticism," a brand of new wave whose tenets were style (mainly pastel suits and moussed-up manes) and synthesizer-driven dance pop with theatric arrangements and uplifting, downright, er, romantic lyrics. Though the movement's most memorable graduate would be Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet helped kick-start it. Gold: The Best of Spandau Ballet culls the cream of the band's five early/mid-'80s studio albums. The sleek, chant-like "Paint Me Down" and the funky bass-based "The Freeze" typify Spandau Ballet's early trendy dance club sound, while the empowering, show-tuney "Gold" and the bouncy, emotive "Only When You Leave" illustrate the band's transformation into a competent, dynamic pop group. And then, of course, there's "True," Spandau Ballet's smash hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Fueled by Tony Hadley's torch-like crooning and the cooey backup vocals by the Brothers Kemp (who would later star on the silver screen as the murderous Krays), the elegant, soulful ballad remains the band's crowning jewel.
