Editorial Reviews

Godzilla was going to be the blockbuster of 1998, the one that stomped all the records and destroyed the competition. As it ruled the box office charts, its soundtrack -- a blend of alt-rock and hip-hop calculated to appeal to the widest possible audience -- would rule the music charts. But Godzilla didn't break box-office records its first week out, and quickly lost its blockbuster momentum. Yet Godzilla: The Album held strong, largely because of two hit singles: the Wallflowers' guitar-oriented yet reverent cover of David Bowie's synthesized anthem "Heroes" and Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page's "Come with Me," which most people know as "'Kashmir'" with a beatbox." These two singles may be radio-oriented, but the artists know their audiences well enough to deliver exactly what they want to hear. Some of the other cuts here also hit the mark -- Green Day's remixed "Brain Stew" rocks hard, Michael Penn's "Macy Day Parade" is predictably tuneful, and the Foo Fighters' "A320" is surprisingly ambitious, considering the circumstances and their adherence to punk-pop. February 12, 2008: I thought this soundtrack was awesome! It has great songs. I didn't really listen to this soundtrack until 2 years after the movie had come out. I thought the movie was horrible. But the soundtrack is awesome. It has great songs like Puff Daddy aka Diddy's "Come With Me", "Air" Ben Folds Five, Green Day "Brain Stew", "Heros" The Wallflowers, and "Underground" Rage Against the Machine. This is definatley an album that someone who is a fan of 90's rock music would enjoy!

February 03, 2006: I think that it's horrible that there is not an isolated recording of just the David Arnold score to 1998's "Godeilla". Instead we have this horrible "Rap Trash" cd. It's tragic that Arnold's score is not made available to the masses. The "Rap Trash" cd has only one track not even running two minutes. Maybe someone will read this and some day produce a music cd only of this great film score.
