Ingrid Michaelson's song "Keep Breathing" is featured on the Grey's Anatomy, Vol. 3 soundtrack. And the New York native's new song "The Way I Am," from her sophomore disc "Girls and Boys," is used in TV ads for Old Navy’s fall campaign. Barnes & Noble

September 27, 2010: I bought this album because Ingrid Michaelson was coming to town, and since her "Everybody" album consistently shows up on my Amazon Recommended for You list, I decided to give her a listen. Boy, am I glad I did! When the first track, "Die Alone," began, I realized it had been one of my three favorite new singles on Paste Magazine's January 2008 (Issue #38) CD. It's a fantastic song, and so is the rest of the album. Michaelson plays around with time signatures, phrasing, instrumentation, technology, and her voice - and the result is striking and successful.

Some reviewers have described Michaelson's music as "pop," and I disagree: I find her sound very difficult to box into one category. There are major differences between the layered, techno-sounding "Die Alone," the light and jazzy "Way I Am," and the folk-inspired Track 12 (hidden, and thus nameless to me). The other songs are terrific and equally innovative. Every time I listen to this album, I hear something new and remarkable. I imagine that my listening experience is similar to listeners of Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark" album when it was first released. That album is so good that it still plays fresh and new; and I suspect "Girls and Boys" will wear just as well.

I Also Recommend: Court and Spark, Everybody, The Story, Give Up the Ghost.

September 27, 2010: granted there's some catchy bits but the lyrics are so sickeningly cutesy that I must complain on behalf of my gag reflex. here's another woefully average and incredibly mainstream singer/songwriter that will make a million dollars while genuinely original and creative artists slurp their ramen.
