Is Opeth prog or death metal? The CD/DVD package Ghost Reveries doesn't deliver any closer knowledge, but that's not for trying: included on the CD is a darkly seductive bonus track, "Soldier of Fortune," and the DVD trots out the entire album, plus a 40-minute making-of documentary and a director's cut of the video to the sprawling "The Grand Conjuration." While the video component makes this a must-have for Opeth true believers -- especially the making-of video, which reinforces why this still-creative 14-year-old band is at the top of its game -- it's the straightforward CD that will linger in listeners' thoughts longest. Production-wise, Ghost Reveries, the CD, retains a smoothness previous discs lacked -- opener "Ghost of Perdition" serves as the on-ramp to a thoughtfully assembled, intricate web of songs that ought to elevate the band to statesmanship within their unhinged league. And vocally, Mikael Åkerfeldt wanders places he's never been before and finds he feels right at home: "The Baying of the Hounds" envelopes the listener in his rich, throaty gloom, while "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" dabbles in a newfound even-keeled pleasantness. Growling, melodicism and dark poetry are all present; so is the sense that Opeth, truly a four-star band, is built to last. ~ Tammy La Gorce, All Music Guide All Music Guide
