About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The calamitous pop racket produced by Viva Voce -- which includes thunderous drums, wailing guitars, multi-part harmonies, strings, horns, screeching feedback, and the occasional musical saw -- might lead listeners to believe the Portland, Oregon, band were a multi-tiered group the size of the Arcade Fire or the Polyphonic Spree. In fact, this wall of sound comes from only two people, husband-and-wife duo Anita and Kevin Robinson, who record everything in their home. On their often magical third album, Get Yr Blood Sucked Out, the Robinsons continue to defy expectations. Opener "I'm a Believer" is a Zepplin-ish stomper; dreamy slide guitar guides the lovely "Drown Them Out"; and "Faster than a Dead Horse" is a droning two-chord jam with an infectious "bah bah bah" chorus. But Get Yr Blood Sucked Out's undisputed centerpiece is "So Many Miles," a swirling, eight-minute slice of psychedelia, driven by a chugging bass line, swirling guitars, and breathy vocals. Like the entire album in miniature, and with both Robinsons really showing off their stuff, it's the sound of bliss -- domestic or otherwise. Bill Pearis, Barnes & Noble

December 06, 2006: Viva Voce are one of those truly great bands that makes use of a variety of influences and turns them into something that is all their own. I find "Get Yr Blood Sucked Out" to be their best work yet. The record is completely addictive, and you might find it hard to stop listening. But then again, why would you want to stop listening?
