Editorial Reviews

Released not long after Warren Zevon announced that he was suffering from terminal cancer, perhaps some could argue that the single-disc Genius: The Best of Warren Zevon exploits his tragedy by recycling his catalog. The argument holds no water, because not only is it worth celebrating the work of this singer/songwriter, but his catalog was calling out for a collection like this. Although there was the double-disc set I'll Sleep When I'm Dead and a 1986 hits collection, there was no set produced during the CD era that chronicled not just his heyday, but his late-'80s comeback while cherrypicking highlights from the '90s. This does exactly that over the course of a generous, sharply selected 22 tracks. Given the space, it's inevitable that some great songs are missing, but if you're looking for a comprehensive overview, turn to the two-disc set. If you're looking for an introduction or simply a stellar selection of highlights, this suits the bill perfectly. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

October 22, 2008: I'm 57 years old and have always been a huge fan of Warren Zevon. I only bring up my age because his music had no age limits - this man wrote from the heart and his songs told a story. You can feel the emotion in his songs be it "Reconsider me", "Hasten Down the Wind", or "Detox Mansion"....you know he's been there and you feel it in his music. Be it going thru rehab or trying to reconnect - his music just gets into your soul and stays there - from "Mutineer" to "Excitable Boy", its all Zevon, he's always been, and will always be, the best. What a loss - the man truly was a "Genius". What a gift he left to all of us.

February 04, 2006: Warren Zevon was one of the LA singer-songwriters of the Seventies. This collection takes almost half of its tracks from that era. Zevon was much closer in attitude to Neil Young, Randy Newman, and Steely Dan than to groups like CSN or the Eagles. The only flaw is that the set focuses on his satirical numbers (Werewolves of London) at the expense of his other work. The title cut shows that he had a wider range than this CD indicates. Also, it would have been nice to hear a live track or two. Even so, if like myself you only want a sample, this may be all you need.
