It is late. Turn the lights low, sit back and relax. Such is the atmosphere of the music of the English composer Gavin Bryars, whose 60th birthday [in January 2003] is marked by [this] Philips release devoted largely to his works of the last decade. The tempos are slow, the general moods reflective and quiet, even somnolent. But this is also dangerous music. It can come out and grab you with sudden violence, or -- more often, and more insidiously -- lead you along pathways of sensuousness and reminiscence to places where trivial music has a beauty all its own.
