Editorial Reviews

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Stephen Sondheim's first musical as both composer and lyricist, was a delightful comedy hit set in ancient Rome and starring Zero Mostel. It included "Comedy Tonight," one of the great opening numbers in Broadway history. This is a reissue of the original Broadway cast recording. William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

February 21, 2009: Years ago I saw this show on Broadway and enjoyed it very much. However after listening to the CD I realized that memories are not always accurate. The music is dated. Nothing really stands out in the performances. If someone had never seen the show they would not have a clue as to the weak storyline unless one read the liner notes. The performances are OK but without the subsequent star power of Zero Mostel I can't think of a reason to recommend this. However, the song "Comedy Tonight still brings a smile to my face.
