About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

This four-CD box set contains all the Nick Drake you need to hear -- which is to say his entire recorded output. Drake, who died of a drug overdose in 1974, released only three albums -- moody folk-rock classics, each -- in his lifetime. And listening to them now you can trace the trajectory of a personality that was slowly coming apart. There's the measured despair of FIVE LEAVES LEFT, which contains gems such as "Fruit Tree" and "Way to Blue." BRYTER LATER is nearly as black, though its gorgeous arrangements make it his most accessible album. Drake even mocks himself on "Poor Boy," as a female chorus intones, "Oh poor boy/So sorry for himself/Oh poor boy/So worried for his health." Some have called BRYTER LAYTER a perfect album, and while that may be stretching things, it's certainly Drake's best and most accessible work. PINK MOON is all blackness, though, with just Drake and his acoustic guitar and piano confronting the abyss of his disintegrating personality. It's gorgeous and tragic at the same time. The fourth disc, "Time of No Reply," contains the last four songs Drake recorded, including the chilling "Black Eyed Dog." There are also some home demos he recorded in 1967 and previously unreleased tracks from his brilliant but all-too-brief career. Daniel Durchholz, Barnes & Noble

December 14, 2000: If you haven't heard Nick Drake you've missed perhaps the best contemporary music produced in the last 50 years. While Drake only made three albums (and a few more songs) before his untimely death, there is enough here to last a lifetime. I play this music repeatedly and it never disappoints. Drake's lyrics can be moody, but you'll appreciate the depth as you listen over the years. The music itself never feels dated. It could have been produced at any time, any place. And Drake's playing is as good as any guitar work you'll ever hear. If you really want to be challenged and ultimately rewarded with great musical and lyrical ability, buy this boxed set. You won't regret it.
