Editorial Reviews

Those who booked passage on the audio journeys of the Gotan Project or the Bajofondo Tango Club have another trip coming. BPM Magazine's Frequent Flyer, the DJ series that delivers two discs of up-to-the-minute house and lounge mixes from exotic ports of call, pays a visit to Argentina. Expect lurching, lunging bandoneon and piano, spliced and diced with the latest electronics. The DJs and producers represented here include the Gotans (a remix of their international hit "Santa Maria" and their own deconstruction of Chet Baker's version of "Round Midnight"), and some expected names along the lines of Thievery Corporation and 4Hero. But there are plenty of new names to master. The first disc, dubbed "La Boca by Night," evokes the stylish excitement of Buenos Aires' trendy neighborhood of bars, clubs, and the like, while the second disc, "San Telmo Afternoon" focuses on the bohemian charms of the city's hipster enclave. So you get the bump 'n' grind and the chill-out. The stately tango would seem a more likely foil for down-tempo electronica, but the differences between the two sets are marginal. Together, they make up a sleek audio journey for fashionable (armchair) travelers. Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble
