Editorial Reviews

Every once in a while, a record comes along in which singer and song seem perfectly suited to one another. Susan Graham is marvelous in French music, and this program of 20th-century French operetta arias is tailor-made to her gifts. It is also a revelation, presenting a slice of the repertoire that has all but disappeared. Many of these arias are just plain fun, as in the opening selection, "C'est ça la vie" from Moïses Simons' Toi c'est moi (1934), with its Latin rhythms, or the lovely, lilting "O mon bel inconnu" from Reynaldo Hahn's 1933 operetta of the same name. But others offer surprisingly sensuous entertainment, like the almost unbearably sultry "Si vous saviez" from Arthur Honneger's Les Aventures du roi Pausole (1930). There's not a dud in the lot, either, and Graham sings them all with style and ample vocal richness. Conductor Yves Abel brings out the music's sweetness without being cloying, and the City of Birmingham Orchestra affects quite a decent French accent. C'est magnifique!
