About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

These familial Nova Scotians, consisting of siblings Ciarán and Fiona MacGillivray and Jimmy and Roseanne MacKenzie, have crafted an impeccably played and produced collection of covers and traditional works that will appeal to fans of the Corrs, as well as fellow Canadians Great Big Sea. The quartet is at its best when plowing through traditional reels, jigs, and polkas like "Miss Casey Medley: Miss Casey's Jig/The Humours of Ballinafauna" and " Honeysuckle Medley," but their choice of covers -- the nubile merrymakers must have been recently introduced to the music of Tom Waits, as they cover "Hold On" and "Georgia Lee" off of his 1999 album Mule Variations -- leave little doubt that they aim for a career outside of the Celtic genre. Time will tell. Reverend Lee Power, All Music Guide

February 25, 2008: I heard one cut of this CD online and dug around to find a CD by them. Was unfamiliar with them but after buying this one, I am a fan. I usually prefer ballads or vocals, but I even enjoyed the reels and instrumentals. Worth a listen if you enjoy this type of music!

February 03, 2006: I recently saw The Cottars perform with The Chieftains and in their short time onstage, they captivated. I purchased this album, and I was willingly captivated again. I have since spent hours with this CD and it continues to surprise and astound me. What pulls you in is the purity of Fiona MacGillivray's voice on "Waterlily", "Atlantic Blue", "Send Me A River", and "Hold On". But what sustains you is the collective joy, energy, and virtuosity that pops out of the speakers on traditional instrumental tracks like "Some Polkas" and "Honeysuckle Medley". Then you hear the other voices in the group - Roseanne MacKenzie and Ciaran MacGillivray on "Waterlily" and "Georgia Lee." The fourth member Jimmy MacKenzie doesn't sing, but his guitar and banjo are there all along. At the end of it all, you realize The Cottars are the real deal.
