About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

On Roxy Music's debut, the tensions between Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry propelled their music to great, unexpected heights, and for most of the group's second album, For Your Pleasure, the band equals, if not surpasses, those expectations. However, there are a handful of moments where those tensions become unbearable, as when Eno wants to move toward texture and Ferry wants to stay in more conventional rock territory; the nine-minute "The Bogus Man" captures such creative tensions perfectly, and it's easy to see why Eno left the group after the album was completed. Still, those differences result in yet another extraordinary record from Roxy Music, one that demonstrates even more clearly than the debut how avant-garde ideas can flourish in a pop setting. This is especially evident in the driving singles "Do the Strand" and "Editions of You," which pulsate with raw energy and jarring melodic structures. Roxy also illuminate the slower numbers, such as the eerie "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," with atonal, shimmering synthesizers, textures that were unexpected and innovative at the time of its release. Similarly, all of For Your Pleasure walks the tightrope between the experimental and the accessible, creating a new vocabulary for rock bands, and one that was exploited heavily in the ensuing decade. February 01, 2001: There is not enough praise I can give this disc. Caught between the original ''glam'' rock era and the goofy '80's, as evidenced in the LP inside liner photos, Roxy Music fit a groove that grew in several directions; From Brian Ferry, Brian Eno and Phil Manzenera there was a group of talent that was capable of standing on their own, individually, at that very time. Eno left the group and did just that after this album, putting out a string of LP's that strung the listener from ambient elevator music to cutting edge rock. Manzenera lived the double life, putting out solo efforts and LP's with the amazing 801. Even Brian Eno teamed up with him on the Live LP. Brian Ferry released more music as time went by and continued to demonstrate his vocal talents. FOR YOUR PLEASURE has some of the best Roxy available. ''Do The Strand'' was a Ferry classic, showcasing his unique vocal style. ''In Every Dream Home A Heartache'' Eno tends to show his style in this haunting tale of suburban angst starting a snail's pace and building to a steaming and abrupt crescendo. Eno's keyboards and ''treatments'' make this song into what it is, and it is, in my humble opinion, the best song on the disc. Whatever your exposure to Roxy Music, consider this a ''must'' for any serious listener's collection and an excellent example of classic Roxy and the pseudo-progressive genre.

mindblowingly chic, a truly brilliant albumby Anonymous

April 23, 2000: people often talk about the beatles' sgt pepper and the beach boys' pet sounds being the most innovative albums ever, but they clearly haven't paid enough attention to roxy music's many other- wordly creations, this being just one of the many examples of their greatness. Listen in awe to the startlingly eclectic, swirling sounds, that beautiful, unique Ferry croon and the true innovation in this album, and you'll see that this band deserve a lot more attention and praise as a truly influential musical creation.
