Editorial Reviews

What happened to Jonathan Pierce? Last we heard -- back in 1997, to be exact -- the smooth-voiced singer had his feet firmly planted in inspirational ground, churning out gooey Top 40 power ballads and eyeing Larnelle Harris's inspo crown. Seems like the intervening years have given Pierce a dose of crossover ambition. For You finds him effortlessly belting out such obvious crossover hits as the Sting-penned "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot," the Latin-flavored "Still the Love of My Life," and the sparkling electronica-inflected gem "Life, Love & Happiness" (Cher should be kicking herself for passing on that one). Pierce's vocals are as beautifully on-target as ever, and this time he's backed by a production team that knows what to do with a real pop singer. Brian Rawling and Billy Mann (the hit-making team behind Cher, Enrique Iglesias, Hall & Oates, and others) make all the difference. It would be easy to turn Pierce's vocals --smooth-as-butter with a powerful, rafter-stabbing range when he wants it -- into Christian pap. Instead, For You sparkles with innovation, just as it's energized by an uplifting message that one can take as Christian -- or not. Heavy on the danceable pop, For You nonetheless showcases Pierce the balladeer on the excellent "Everlasting Love" and "I Wouldn't Last a Day." Whether For You will propel Jonathan Pierce into the realm of international stardom remains to be seen, but he has certainly delivered the goods on his end. Lisa Zhito, Barnes & Noble
