Editorial Reviews

AC/DC's hot streak began to draw to a close with For Those About to Rock We Salute You. While Back in Black was infused with the energy and spirit of paying tribute to Bon Scott, it became apparent on the follow-up that the group really did miss Scott more than it initially indicated. Brian Johnson's lyrics started to seem more calculated and a bit clichéd, lacking Scott's devil-may-care sense of humor. And the band itself slowed down the tempo frequently, sounding less aggressive and inspired. There is still some decent material here -- the title track, for example, which became a concert staple with cannon-firing sound effects. Steve Huey, All Music Guide

December 17, 2006: For Those About to Rock is hated by many casual AC/DC fans. And it's not hard to see why. This album is always going to linger in the shadow of Back in Black, which was released the year before. Back in Black, of course, was the band's most accesible album and their commercial masterwork. With For Those About to Rock, AC/DC realized that trying to top Back in Black was probably a bad idea. They tried some new things on this record. Some of it worked and some of it didn't. AC/DC were more subtle and progressive in places, a risky move for the band used to their typical formula without much variation. If you are into the Brian Johnson era, buy Back in Black first, then this album or Flick of the Switch. Either way, you will be disappointed at first, as nothing compares to Back in Black. But time and repeated plays reveal a handful of gems on these albums, especially for fans of the Brian Johnson stuff. Of the first three Brian Johnson-sung AC/DC albums, For Those About to Rock is probably the weakest, but it's still necessary for serious fans, for the title track alone. It's a good album, if not great. Keep in mind that the band had just become widely popular and needed to get this album on the shelves for marketing as soon as possible.....
