Editorial Reviews

Rodgers & Hammerstein return to a theme that had served them well in both The King and I and South Pacific: misunderstanding and reconciliation between individuals of differing cultural backgrounds. This 1958 musical revolved around the meeting of old and new worlds in San Francisco's Chinatown. Flower Drum Song has a serviceable score but is not the team's most exciting. The novelty "I Enjoy Being a Girl" is more often excerpted than the lovely and overlooked "Love Look Away." The show also resulted in a film adaptation and ran for 600 performances in New York, where it was directed by Gene Kelly. The New York cast, featuring Miyoshi Umeki (who was in the film adaptation), does very well with this bright and lovely score. ~ Marjorie Ellen Ruhlmann and Sarah Erlewine, All Music Guide All Music Guide
