About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

There are so many poor to middling flamenco records available that it can be daunting to choose one. However, Pepe Romero's Flamenco Fenomeno! is simply what the title suggests, a breathtaking collection of solo guitar performances of traditional flamenco tunes that is both stunning in its virtuosity and compelling in the clear and powerful emotion conveyed in Romero's playing. The technical quality of the performances is remarkable, with nary a missed note even during the most blindingly quick runs, but there's a purity and simplicity to Romero's playing as well. Many flamenco players tend to over-embellish their melodies with extraneous and distracting filigrees, but while Romero's playing is suitably ornate, as befits flamenco music, he wisely lets the melodies speak for themselves. The remarkable thing is that Romero, who has since become one of the most respected flamenco guitarists in the world, was a 15-year-old sophomore at Hollywood High School in 1960 when these performances were recorded. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide All Music Guide
