Editorial Reviews

To his credit, soundtrack producer Hal Willner has chosen some pretty adventurous material for the Gus Van Sant film Finding Forrester. Miles Davis gets the majority of space, but he's represented not by the typical ballads and bop that characterize his most popular style, but by extended fusion tracks from the 1970s (the nearly 19-minute "Reflections," a moody, mysterious masterwork), the atmospheric "Little Church," and the funky "Black Satin." (Other Davis tracks include an excerpt from "Lonely Fire"; "Vonetta," featuring his classic 1960s quintet, and a DJ Cam remix of "In a Silent Way." Two superb Ornette Coleman pieces ("Happy House" and "Foreigner in a Free Land") virtually burst off the CD, while guitarist Bill Frisell's four tunes have all the ambient lyricism that this instrumentalist has become famous for. (His lovely "Over the Rainbow" for solo guitar and tapes loops is a highlight.) Smart music for listeners willing to go beyond standard soundtrack fare. William Pearl, Barnes & Noble

September 11, 2004: Have NOT seen the movie & I don't buy soundtracks, but just looking for Iz's rendition of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and when I found it here... on track #8...whoever Roland C. is, he's not Israel Kamakawiwo'ole with his amazing voice...and then to see it along with our NW local Bill Frisell... that sold me! What a great compilation.
