Though best known at the time of recording as a master of early music, conductor Philippe Herreweghe was also an all-round master of choral music, and he elicits refined, balanced, and fervent singing from La Chapelle Royale here. Herreweghe has joined Fauré's justly famous "Requiem" with his unjustly neglected "Messe des Pêcheurs de Villerville," giving listeners already familiar with the main work an unusual and enjoyable filler. Even better, Harmonia Mundi's sound is unusually warm and immediate for a 1988 digital recording with a real sense of time and place. For listeners who already know Fauré's "Requiem," Herreweghe's deeply felt but appropriately restrained performance will rival the great performances of the past, while his sweet-toned but by no means saccharine take on the "Messe" will introduce them to another almost as fine work.
