In this marvelous 1962 coupling of the cello sonatas of Fauré and Debussy by cellist Paul Tortelier and pianist Jean Hubeau, Fauré's yearning emotionality begs the listener's sympathy. Aided by the unstinting support of accompanist Hubeau, Tortelier's interpretations are richly nuanced, lushly colored, and deeply affecting, and anyone who enjoys the repertoire or the instrument will surely enjoy this disc. It must be noted, however, that the original stereo sound is close and lacking in depth, and some listeners used to more smoothly modulated stereo sound may at first be put off by the sheer presence of the performers.
