Slapping together hit song albums became a popular trend during the 1980s, but finding entire soundtrack albums that were cohesive and thoroughly enjoyable were few and far between. Fortunately, the 67 minute double-album Irving Azoff put together for the hilariously raunchy 1982 teen comedy FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH is one of the best; a vivid musical trip back in time that assembles various artists and groups from the early '80s. Highlighted by Jackson Browne's classic "Somebody's Baby" (written, as many of these songs were, as an original composition for the movie), the soundtrack features memorable contributions from Ravyns ("Raised on the Radio"), Stevie Nicks ("Sleeping Angel"), Poco ("I'll Leave it Up to You"), and Oingo Boingo ("Goodbye, Goodbye"), along with assorted tracks from the likes of Don Henley, Donna Summer, Sammy Hagar, Jimmy Buffet, Gerard McMahon, and others. It would be easy to dismiss the album as being merely frivolous '80s pop music, but so much of the album is thoroughly fun and thoughtfully produced, that FAST TIMES is more than just a trip down memory lane.
