About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Like their stylistic predecessors the Grateful Dead, Phish are a wonderful anomaly in the music industry: a band capable of not only surviving but thriving while circumventing the usual routes to success. FARMHOUSE, which the group recorded in guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio's refurbished 150-year-old barn, is a testament to this fact. The low-key studio setting likely accounts for the album's sense of freedom and relaxed, cleared-eared concision, something lacking on earlier efforts. Phish capture more of the ebullience, strength, and diversity that has long been a part of their reputation-building live shows with a focused intensity that keeps their priceless jams from meandering. The title track opens FARMHOUSE with the cheerful groove and rich vocal harmonies that are Phish trademarks and then segues through songs that highlight the full scope of the band's abilities. There's the propulsive train groove of the aptly named "Back on the Train," the bouncy funk of "Gotta Jibboo," the chaotic yet joyous feel of "Piper," and the pensive tone to the acoustic interlude "The Inlaw Josie Wales." "First Tube" closes the album with an in-the-pocket groove and an elongated melody. Remarkably, not one song clocks in over seven minutes. With FARMHOUSE, Phish finally harnesses the energy and creativity of their live shows into a recorded work that translates their skills as evocative songwriters -- which means one of the most dynamic live bands may actually, deservedly get on the radio. Bravo. Steve DeLuca, Barnes & Noble

October 31, 2000: I absolutely love Phish, but I have to disagree with a couple things that they have done with Farmhouse. Number one: Piper and Twist should have remained live treats only. I really do not like the versions that they cut, but to tell you the truth I really don't like much of the studio stuff that Phish has done in the past with the exception of Billy Breathes. Number two: as someone who loves the idea that Phish is something special, who not everyone knows about or understands, i don't like them releasing song's on the radio, such as Heavy Things. Other than that, Farmhouse is a great listen, especially in long duaration's because of the way it is presented. This album is a great purchase for new Phans but if you really want the experience from an album you can pick up at the local music store, I recommend A Live One.

July 11, 2000: Phish, although opting for a more 'poppish' sound in a couple of tracks, has outdone themselves again. Speaking as a true Phan, I must say that this album is wonderful and has already spend a fair amount of time in my player. I had to set old favorites like Lawn Boy and Slip Stitch and pass aside and make room for this new one! I will comment that Farmhouse (when 'alright' is repeated over and over again) and Heavy Things (the 'whoaaas') sound a little bit like they are trying for radio play or something. But I like them nonetheless. Anyway, my point is that Phish is awesome, and if you have never listened to them, or would like to give them a shot, try Farmhouse.
