About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Given the cinematic sweep of Evanescence's sound, it's not surprising that they've garnered attention in Hollywood -- the producers of the Marvel Comics–inspired film Daredevil included two Evanescence songs on the movie's soundtrack: "My Immortal" and the propulsive single "Bring Me to Life." There's a gauzy vagueness at play in the band's sound, one that allows for surreptitious segues from sweet to sour and dark to light. Clearly influenced by bands like the Cocteau Twins and the Sugarcubes, the Arkansas-bred quartet rely more on shading than aggression, with Amy Lee's haunting voice delving into the obscure corners of songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted." The layers of sound -- not so much standard riffs as textured bits of melody -- that emanate from Ben Moody's guitar beckon teasingly, then shift into post-industrial overdrive on desperate-sounding tracks like "Going Under." Breathe deep the gathering gloom. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble
