Fado is Portugal's language of the soul. Since the early 1800s, the barest of emotions have been conveyed through the balladry of fado, cementing it as the country's national art form. Golden Stars three-disc anthology of the genre's origin focuses on recordings form the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, with special attention paid to the "Queen" of fado, Amalia Rodrigues. While the sound quality is indicative of its time period, Fados From Portugal succeeds by including definitive versions of fado standards within a historically accurate timeline.
