Editorial Reviews

Having missed Instant Happiness from this Seattle vehicle for singer/songwriter Gary Reynolds, hopefully it's not too late to get in on music often compared to David Bowie, ELO, and the Beatles? Or perhaps Reynolds got tired of comparisons, as there's only a faint aroma of that here. There are devout '60s-isms, still. "Positively Me" can be mistaken for Bacharach & David's 1964 Lou Johnson hit "Always Something There to Remind Me" (let's leave aside dire Naked Eyes, shall we?) and "Bombs Away" and "All Because of You" similarly bounce -- the latter a little like "A Little Help from My Friends." But what this really sounds like is something more mannered by Squeeze a decade later, with a jigger of the Romantics. Kind of like the Minus Five covering Difford & Tilbrook? Not bad, if a bit trad.
