Editorial Reviews

Wrapped in what is possibly the most prog rock sleeve design in hip-hop history, Exit 13 marks LL Cool J's departure from Def Jam, the pioneering label the MC helped build. It begins with "It's Time for War," an embittered reclamation where he sounds more like he's shooing kids off his lawn than reigning over his territory. There are a couple tracks where LL sounds as on fire as ever, usually when his targets are specific rather than general, as on "You Better Watch Me" and "This Is Ring Tone M..." Still, the album's tone tilts toward the reactionary in its clear desire to sound just like a standard 2008 mainstream rap album, with unnecessary references to Petron and Cognac and in-your-face evidence that LL really wants you to know he's not behind the times. November 18, 2008: I am oldschool, and a lot of the hip hop out there today, sucks and is based on "catchy hooks" and one-hit wonders, this CD is nice I like it, but I have been an LL Cool J fan for years. I really enjoy bumping this CD when I am riding. Favorites on the CD "oldschool, new school" "Baby" & "Baby" remix (Rock style); "Cry", "We Rolling"; Mr. President; Rocking with the G.O.A.T. and all the other songs, too! Get this CD you won't be disappointed I wasn't, because the quality is there in every song, beat and LL's flow is awesome....Love this CD, one of my favorites of 2008.

September 16, 2008: Unfortunately for me, LL's new album felt more like a sampler CD of new unusual ideas that he was just throwing around in the studio one restless night. The tracks are a mixed bag of hit or miss songs that may or may not make the hit list, with some fresh old school styled club bangers to some been there done that rehashed sounds. Not a bad last ditch effort for the label he helped launch and put on the map, Def Jam, but not his strongest. I feel his last album, Todd Smith, had an LL Cool J personality and didn't sound like the rest of the run of the mill rap crowed. Exit 13 started off strong but towards the end the week moments like American Girl and Mr. Presindent which didn't quite fit, brought the CD down a notch, with an anti-climactic ending. I'll give it a 31/2, because I like LL's style and delivery, but not in this package.
