About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Wrapped in what is possibly the most prog rock sleeve design in hip-hop history, Exit 13 marks LL Cool J's departure from Def Jam, the pioneering label the MC helped build. Beginning with the blustery and overblown "It's Time for War," Exit 13 does include a couple tracks where LL sounds as on fire as ever, usually when his targets are specific rather than general, as on "You Better Watch Me" and "This Is Ring Tone M...." Elsewhere, the album's tone tilts toward the reactionary in its clear desire to sound just like a standard 2008 mainstream rap album, with unnecessary references to Petron and Cognac and in-your-face evidence that LL really wants you to know he's not behind the times. [A clean version of the album was also made available.] Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

September 12, 2008: This CD was a lot better than I expected. I've heard many of the original songs that were suppose to be on the CD, but he changed them all, so I didn't know what to expect. He has a lot of guest artist, but it's a great blend he's not overshadowed by them. He uses a lot more bands with this project, which I think is great. You can tell that its not the average hip-hop CD of today. The CD starts off with &#8220 Time for War,&#8221 which reminded me of LL from &#8220 I&#8217 m Bad&#8221 days by the way he was rapping. It&#8217 s a classic. A few more really good tracks are &#8220 You Better Watch Me,&#8221 which was produced my Marley Mal. This is another classic. It shows that he can be hard when he wants to be. It shows his versatility, which is something that most rappers don&#8217 t have. &#8220 Mr. President&#8221 with Wyclef Jean on the hook is another good track. It talks about service member dying in war, etc&#8230 . &#8220 Get over Here&#8221 is a dirty South type of song. It&#8217 s much better than I expected. He has a couple of new people on it and it flows very well. &#8220 Come and Party&#8221 with me features Fat Joe is another song that is much better than I expected. This is definitely a club banger &#8220 I Fall in Love&#8221 is a smooth track, but not to the point where you want to go and make babies. It has a great flow and will keep your attention the entire time. This is just SOME of the positives. The &#8220 Baby&#8221 Rock Remix is catchy and I actually like it, but it doesn&#8217 t flow with the CD. &#8220 American Girl&#8221 is not one of my favorites. It didn&#8217 t catch me from the start and probably shouldn&#8217 t have made the CD. &#8220 This is Ring Tone Murder&#8221 is a hit or a miss. Either you will like it or you won&#8217 t. I am not feeling it. He has some songs on his mixed tape that should&#8217 ve replaced these that are straight hot. If you haven&#8217 t heard the mixed tape, you can look it up online and download it for free. Had he done that, this CD would definitely rate 5 starts. But with the above shortcomings, I still give it 4 out of 5. Definitely worth the purchase!
