About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

After the success of 2003's stellar I Can't Stop, Al Green and longtime collaborator Willie Mitchell reconvene for the equally magical Everything's OK. The pair invite back the same studio vets that helped make their last collaboration so special, and the subsequent party boasts equally winning results. Trademark Rhodes-Chalmers-Rhodes harmonies add sweet nuance to the pleading "Nobody But You" and the equally yearning but more upbeat "Be My Baby." Mitchell borrows a page from the Gamble & Huff book of Philly soul, giving Green's gorgeous rendition of "You Are So Beautiful" a lush orchestral arrangement. The pair also draw on a '70s Black cinema soul vibe for the original title cut, which boasts a dramatic mix of horns and wah-wah guitar. But above all, it's Green's singular vocals that continue to complement Mitchell's masterful production, whether the good Reverend is getting gritty alongside harmonica player Bobby Rush's harp riffs on the horn-soaked "I Can Make Music," or seamlessly shifting gears into his unrelenting falsetto amid the testifying that defines "Real Love." Given the quality of songs, Everything's OK easily stacks up next to such classic '70s-era Green albums as Green Is Blues and Livin' for You, and this preacher's return to secular soul is much more than satisfactory.
