Editorial Reviews

Founded by Gerard Cosloy and Chris Lombardi in the autumn of 1989, Matador Records emerged as one of the most important and influential American independent labels of the decade to follow, largely defining the sound and spirit of indie rock through seminal releases from artists including Pavement, Liz Phair, Yo la Tengo, and Guided by Voices. The three-disc Everything Is Nice celebrates Matador's tenth anniversary by compiling key singles, live tracks, and rarities, spotlighting the label's vaunted eclecticism by assembling material by everyone from grrrl-punk icons Sleater-Kinney to Japanese pop savant Cornelius to drone merchants Bardo Pond. Some of the inclusions are questionable at best -- Pavement's "Stereo" over "Summer Babe"? For shame -- but as an introduction the set more than serves its purpose, with the abundance of unreleased tracks making it worthwhile for longtime fans as well. Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
