The São Paulo-born Eliane Elias is as gifted a pianist and vocalist as she is underrated. On EVERYTHING I LOVE she works with two superior rhythm teams: bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Jack DeJohnette, and bassist Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen. (Rodney Jones lends a hand on guitar). Elias visits various styles and influences: her range encompasses the playful virtuosity of Bud Powell on her own "Bowing to Bud" to the bebop artistry of Dizzy Gillespie, through his early Afro-Cuban jazz composition "Woody 'n' You", and the spare, searching lines of Miles Davis on a performance of the standard "I Fall in Love Too Easily," done in the ruminative style of the late ballad master. Elias considers herself first and foremost a pianist -- she's both an accomplished performer and composer and an elastic and unerring interpreter. Yet her vocal work is also thoroughly engaging: Whispery, smoky and supple, her voice glides easily over her trio's meditations, especially on a short and sweet version of Irving Berlin's "They Say It's Wonderful." And everything Elias touches -- be it bop, ballads, or bossa nova -- is enlivened by the rhythmic subtlety and assurance that her background in Brazilian music ensures. Elsie St. Leger

Eliane Elias is such a fine hard bop/post-bop pianist that it is a pity that she occasionally feels compelled to vocalize; her singing voice is small, quiet, and unimpressive. However, other than her brief vocals on "The Beat of My Heart," "I Fall in Love Too Easily," and "Blah Blah Blah," this is a strong trio set. Elias interacts with either the bass-drum team of Marc Johnson and Jack DeJohnette or Christian McBride and Carl Allen, with guitarist Rodney Jones just popping up briefly on one song. Elias' playing is often introspective, but always very expressive and she swings hard on the faster pieces. She is one of the underrated greats of the jazz piano. Scott Yanow
