About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

On Escape, Enrique Iglesias' second English-language album, the MTV heartthrob distances himself from his Latin dance-pop peers by infusing his music with plaintive guitar flourishes and adventurous vocals more typical of rock balladeers. Iglesias co-wrote every song, and his evolving sound is much closer to matchbox twenty's Rob Thomas than to Ricky Martin, especially on the string-laden smash "Hero" -- which has been embraced as a theme song of sorts for firefighters and police officers, many of whom sacrificed their lives to save others during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on America. Other tracks take their lead from his dance-floor hit Bailamos, such as the driving, club-ready title track; the kinky "One Night Stand," with its pulsating beat and synth-accented swooshes; and the Erasure-esque "If the World Crashes Down," which features backing vocals from a gospel choir and an exuberant drum machine rhythm. Iglesias, however, hasn't completely forsaken his roots, and Escape features both English- and Spanish-language versions of three tracks (the title track, "Don't Turn Off the Lights," and "Hero"). By transcending the confines of the Latin pop genre with a mature, rock-infused sound, Iglesias proves his mettle and his staying power. Ganda Suthivarakom, Barnes & Noble

March 29, 2004: I bought my first "Enrique" cd today. My 15 year old daughter and I were upstairs being silly, laying on my bed, reading his words. She thinks I've gone mad buying an "Enrique" CD because I'm an almost 40 year old mom. We were listening to "If the World Crashes Down" and I said, "Picture us driving up to up to Lookout Mountain (west of Denver) by the big "M" in your taxi cab yellow-Jetta with red Hawaiian seat covers and listening to Enrique together". She just looked at me and laughed! Fun, Fun.
