Editorial Reviews

In the wake of his induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Tru Gems released this two-disc anthology of the music of Jody Reynolds, known mainly for his 1958 hit "Endless Sleep." Although Endless... is a generous (53 tracks) and affordable collection, it is marred by poor sound quality and a lack of information about the individual recordings. Reynolds' big hit and many of the other commercially released tracks on this anthology were poorly mastered from vinyl, while other tracks are muffled and sound like demos. Some of the selections may in fact be demos, but no information is provided as to recording dates, which is a major annoyance since the anthology spans the years 1958-1980. There are some interesting moments, including two duets Reynolds cut with a young Bobbie Gentry in 1964, but even diehard rockabilly enthusiasts may be disappointed in this package when they discover how little actual rockabilly is here (most of the music falls somewhere between country and pop). Many of Reynolds' early singles are not included, so despite its length, Endless... is neither a definitive compilation nor an essential one. Greg Adams, All Music Guide
