This is one of the best bargains around: Classic performances of three English masterpieces for about the price of a pot of tea. The "Enigma" Variations is a set of musical character portraits of Elgar's friends. The composer also hid a secret theme within the main theme -- an "enigma" musicologists have yet to deduce. Everyone knows the middle section of the first "Pomp and Circumstance" March as it's the ubiquitous accompaniment to graduation ceremonies. But these marches are not merely ceremonial; beneath their splendid imperial surface is a darker undercurrent, most noticeable in the grittier textures of Marches Nos. 2 and 3. "Cockaigne" is a musical picture postcard of London, with all its historic charm and raucous pomposity.
