About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Guitarist Al di Meola's second record as a leader is generally an explosive affair, although it does have a fair amount of variety. With Jan Hammer or Barry Miles on keyboards, electric bassist Anthony Jackson, drummer Lenny White (Steve Gadd takes his place on the "Elegant Gypsy Suite"), and percussionist Mingo Lewis on most of the selections, di Meola shows off his speedy and rock-ish fusion style. He was still a member of Return to Forever at the time and was a stronger guitarist than composer, but di Meola did put a lot of thought into this music. The brief "Lady of Rome, Sister of Brazil" (an acoustic guitar solo) and "Mediterranean Sundance" (an acoustic duet with fellow guitarist Paco de Lucía) hints at di Meola's future directions. A near classic in the fusion vein. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

March 09, 2003: I presented this lp to my guitar player during a recording session to help take his mind off the rigors of the final mixing. After a couple days he wants to "redo a solo or two...". Oh, brother! And would you believe when I tell you that the added parts sounded like they were peeled right off Al DiMeola's "Elegant Gypsy" lp! This lp is fantastic in composition, production, & musical delivery. My faves are "Flight Over Rio" & "Race with Devil...". Too bad this falls under the "jazz" label because this is mighty fine rock & roll also. "Elegant Gypsy" & DiMeola have influenced many rock & rollers. My guitarist & I believe this first hand! Classical, acoustic, & electric guitars all on board for this flight!

March 23, 2000: This album is a true extension of DiMeola's experience with Return To Forever. The arrangements expsoses the listener to different styles of jazz, rock, fusion, and Latin music. My favorite track is Race with Devil on Spanish Highway. On that track, you will notice stark changes in tempo, melody, and chord changes. If you are a Return to Forever fan, this album is a must have in your collection.
