About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The secret behind the glam pop of gorgeous, oh-so-groovy T. Rex mastermind Marc Bolan was this: Always make it seem heavy. On his excellent Electric Warrior -- a title that projects heavy-osity despite its music's carefully catchy touch -- Bolan's endless aura of cool turns lyrical inanities into psychedelic poetry. Released in 1971 (six years before Bolan's death in a car accident), T. Rex's sixth album is packed with ripping guitar riffs and even better rock 'n' roll imagery -- "You're built like a car/You've got a hubcap diamond star halo," Bolan sings on the hit "Bang a Gong," an anthem of abandon that sounds cool and controlled. T. Rex's lyrics didn't always make sense, as in "Under the alligator rain/My heart's all pain" from the thumping "Mambo Sun." But judging by the positive vibes of the album's closer, "Life's a Gas" ("But it really doesn't matter at all/Life's a gas/Hope it's gonna last"), it's doubtful this hipster would have gotten hung up on a critique of his lyrics. He was right anyway. When it comes to pop, the words really don't matter at all, either -- as long as it sounds good. And Electric Warrior sounds very good indeed. Seth Kaufman, Barnes & Noble

March 27, 2003: It had to come,he had struggled for years, now it was the right time:"Electric Warrior" made Marc Bolan the Megastar he knew he could be.He was very talented with words.Even back with John´s Children and the banned "Desdemona"(some line said"take up thy shirt and fly").Tyrannosaurus Rex was a project mostly with an accustic touch and may be a little strange because the lyrics was very old british and mystic fairytales. "Electric Warrior" on the other hand was full of raw boogie that since then became Bolan´s trademark. He couldn´t do much more. He filled in some slower songs on every album and to my opinion Marc was very limited in music terms but his lyrics were brilliant.I really love "Cosmic Dancer" for instance. On "E.W." he toned down his words to almost a minimum and you couldn´t understand the half of it anyhow! But the public loved it. Marc had such a charisma and had this childish feel to everything. There are hits on this work like "Hot Love"(T.Rex major break- through in Europe)"Get It On" and "Jeepster". One favourite number of mine is included on this new expanded version of "Electric Warrior" and that´s "Woodland Rock".And it works,it fits in very alright so I´m very happy to see people trying to give an artist like Bolan this treatment. He was a good performer.
