Where young Enrique Iglesias so often fails to convince with his whispery delivery, Spain's Alejandro Sanz takes the same quiet-fire approach and truly makes your heart spark and smolder right along with his. Indeed, from an abundance of airborne metaphors to an album photo of him pulling off his shirt only to reveal a patch of blue sky in his chest, Sanz is clearly on cloud nine with his Alma al Aire. Few crooners out there sing with such a genuinely poetic sensibility, and this is clearly Latin pop balladry of a higher order. There's no elite cadre of chart-happy songwriters to be found here -- just Sanz by himself, penning the lovestruck songs in his heart. His longtime producer, however, Emanuele Ruffinengo, adds a touch of Euro pop and a classy sense of dynamics, making the music dip and soar to rousing effect. Orchestral piano, winds, and strings swell beneath Sanz' gasps of romantic desperation on "Cuando Nadie Me Va," while trumpets, flamenco guitars, and a sweeping chorus lift the soulful title track on high. This sixth album clearly shows Sanz to be setting his sights on even bigger and better things. Abraham Velez, Barnes & Noble
