Editorial Reviews

As a rule, when a musician flees a longstanding professional partnership due to "musical differences," he ends up charting a course that's almost identical to that blazed by the ship he deserted. Not so with Echobrain, a power trio that's given former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted a new direction and a new lease on creative life. The band's debut, while every bit as heavy as Newsted's more familiar work, bears few of Metallica's thrash/gloom markings. The ten tunes on this self-titled disc are uniformly sparse, choogling numbers that split the difference between classic '70s hard rock (the Grand Funk-ish "Highway 44") and the alterna-metal of vintage Sub Pop acts like Mudhoney and early Soundgarden (the snide, surly "Colder World"). There's still a palpable sense of awe on the part of Newsted's bandmates, Dylan Dorkin and Brian Sagrafena, both of whom are a good decade and a half younger than the bassist. But while they seem content to toil in his shadow, both manage to assert themselves often enough: Dorkin's vocals, while sometimes jittery, show a fair amount of arena-stage potential (although he'll have to hone his lyric writing a bit if he expects punters to sing along while head-banging). The "no hard feelings" sign is hung with care by Metallica six-stringer Kirk Hammett, who adds some brawny guitar leads to "Suckerpunch," but his presence is only the icing on a cake that Newsted and company have baked to a tasty perfection. May 29, 2002: To say that this album is a departure from Metallica would be a vast understatement. It is an excellent blend of Rock/Funk/60's Groove/ and a small bit of ska blended in for good measure. It is well written, the lead singer has a good voice and the music is excellent. You will find yourself singing along or tapping your feet on the second listen. Classic.
