Bill Douglas is a bassoonist, pianist, and composer who for 30 years has toured and recorded with classical clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. His compositions range from symphonic to jazz, but best of all is the pastoral-flavored music he's written for the Ars Nova Singers and chamber ensemble. The songs on EARTH PRAYER are as sturdy as an English stone wall, yet as delicate as sparrow down. It's like looking out from an ancient castle to lush green pastures covered by golden mist. Douglas's keyboards give his music symphonic depth, but the use of piano and bassoon maintain an intimate mood. Tabla and frame drum, played by Ty Burhoe, add Middle Eastern and medieval flair. The Ars Nova Singers, conducted by Thomas Morgan, sing wordless vocals as well as lyrics by poets like Tennyson, Yeats, Shelley, and Shakespeare. EARTH PRAYER is a radiant dream but has its feet firmly planted on this green planet. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble
