Editorial Reviews

Rock singers and songwriters usually wait until they are well into their careers to reveal their fondness for jazz and classic pop -- think of Rod Stewart or Elvis Costello or Linda Ronstadt. Norway's Sondre Lerche is barely into his 20s, with two albums of well-crafted, nuanced songs to his credit, but he's already making that jazz move, both as a writer and as a singer. Duper Sessions, recorded with his longtime trio plus pianist Erik Halvorsen, is full of late-night, supper-club crooning in the manner of Chet Baker; it has a live, spontaneous feel that belies its sophisticated songcraft. Although Lerche is beloved by the indie-rock community, Duper Sessions suggests affinities with jazz-pop vocalists such as Jamie Cullum, Harry Connick Jr., or Holly Cole, at least this time out (a third "rock" album is promised soon). Most impressively, Lerche's songs, such as the sighing "(You Knocked Me) Off My Feet," the swinging "Everyone's Rooting for You," and the tumbling "The Curse of Being in Love," stand up in the company of covers of Cole Porter's "Night and Day," Elvis Costello's "Human Hands," and Prefab Sprout's "Nightingales." On the super Duper Sessions, Lerche's precocious talent will knock you off your feet. Steve Klinge, Barnes & Noble
